Suum Cuique – “Strohtopf”

[Album: Ascetic Ideals]

I’m sure that we can discuss the borderline between ambient and noise over and over before we fail to reach a conclusion. Maybe the borderline is “does it make you wince?” Strohtopf probably straddles this line, with plenty of spaciousness in the middle where you can float like Bowman, orbited by staggeringly massive objects which loom indifferent. Where it shines its light in your eye, it stings. This is how it feels to be reduced to component matter. There’s a symphonic quality to these oscillating slashes of piano-wire and slow-drifting space junk – a slow build, point and counterpoint. But, it’s still noisy. Definitely noisy. The soundtrack to abandoned colonies, soon to be buried in chromatic dust.
