Laurel Noose – Dog Grave

Mystery is in the aesthetic of noise. Part of what’s compelling about harsh noise is the package: the artist, the song title, the music, the format. Most noise is obscure and homemade, and little to nothing known about the artist. Discovery may be part of the appeal of the genre. Dog Grave is a cassette that I still wonder about – Laurel Noose is a project I think about sometimes. It’s a gorgeous piece of harsh noise – crisp, vibrant, oblique, and punctuated by gulfs of silence to give form to those sheer walls of sound. Laurel Noose made tapes for a few years under several names (most well-known being I Am A Lake Of Burning Orchids), giving them away for free on Tumblr until, one day, the (anonymous) artist announced they would no longer be making music and vanished. Dog Grave, along with several other excellent cassettes under different monikers, remains as proof. Nothing will ever be explained.
